The International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) stands in solidarity with the Peruvian people, especially thinking of the half million Domestic Workers who are among the people most affected by the social, political, and institutional crisis that the country is going through.
The protests began on December 9, when a large part of the Peruvian people took to the streets to support former president Pedro Castillo, ousted and sentenced to 18 months in pretrial detention, and to demand the resignation of the new president, Dina Boluarte, the dissolution of the Congress, early elections and a constitutional reform. In response to the events, the president decreed a State of National Emergency and a curfew in fifteen provinces, on December 14. Furthermore, she mobilized the armed forces to complement the police work in containing the protests, which only intensified popular discontent and resulted in a bloody repression against the civilian population through the use of firearms and the launching of tear gas from helicopters. In the last few hours, the premises of social organizations and unions were as well raided by the police, who arrested several people for exercising the right to protest, including journalists who are critical of the current government for expressing their opinions against what is, without a doubt, one of the biggest violations of human rights in recent times in Latin America.
