The IDWF is governed by an executive committee that is elected by its members at an international Congress held every 5 years (the founding Congress was held in Uruguay in October 2013). The Executive Committee plays a central role in ensuring that IDWF acts according to its purpose and vision, and it is responsible for the IDWF’s policies and governance as well as staff support and oversight. The Executive Committee is composed of the General Secretary (ex officio) and one representative from each of the following regions: Africa, Asia/Pacific, Latin America, Caribbean, Europe and North America. An alternate representative is also chosen from each region to assume the duties of the Executive Committee member when s/he is unable to do so.

As of February 2023, the IDWF is made up of 88 affiliates from 68 countries, serving a membership of over 670,000 domestic and household workers – and growing. This is an astonishing accomplishment for an organisation with a history of less than a decade – but there is still much work to do in order to increase the reach and impact of IDWF programmes in answer to unmet demand.
The Congress is the highest decision-making body of the IDWF and will be conducted at least every five years. Extraordinary Congresses can be convened by decision of the Executive Committee or on petition from a simple majority.
