Read more less When climate change impacts communities, women and girls face particular challenges. Weak public services and disaster response exacerbate poverty and inequality. These factors lead to internal displacement or cross-border migration for a growing number of women and girls, who may also face intersecting oppressions including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity, and religion. When women migrate, they face similar barriers. Robust social protection systems, decent work including in the health and care sector, access to public services and public infrastructure are necessary both to prevent displacement, meet basic needs and empower women and girls adapt and build resilience to climate change and conflict.

Centering Decent Work for Domestic Workers in the Care Economy

Read more less There are 75.6M paid domestic workers worldwide who also fulfill the care needs of the global population. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the ILO estimated that 2.1 billion people needed care and warned of a “care crisis” if not adequately addressed. The pandemic accelerated this crisis, deepening pre-existing gender inequalities and norms and putting unprecedented stress on our already overburdened care systems.

This parallel event will provide an opportunity to hear from domestic workers leaders, policy makers and officials who will explore what it means to implement ILO’s five Rs framework through policies while centering decent work in the care economy.
