In the context of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62), the IDWF was invited by Care International to an Expert Group Workshop on “Violence and Harassment against Women in the World of Work” on 13 March 2018.

The workshop, co-convened by UN Women and Care International, aimed at discussing evidence and promising practices in preventing and tackling violence and harassment in the world work among different stakeholders (ILO, trade unions, NGOs, governments, development agencies, researchers, and other). Comments and recommendations from the meeting will be used for the development of an ILO/UN Women Handbook “Promising Practices in ending Violence Against Women in the World of Work”. This is planned to be released during the International Labour Conference (ILC) later this year. Shirley Pryce, from the Jamaica Household Worker’s Union and IDWF Executive Committee Member, was able to represent the Federation given her participation at different events at CSW62.

During the workshop, Shirley ensured domestic worker’s voices, experiences and needs were heard. She was joined by partners and allies in the movement of domestic workers, informal economy and organizations addressing GBV: Allison Julien, National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) NY office; Marieke Koning, ITUC; Robin R. Runge, Solidarity Center; Adwoa Sakya, IUF Africa; Sofia Trevino, Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO)/IDWF; Cassandra Waters, AFL-CIO; Jahnavi Dave, HomeNet South Asia; and representatives of Care, ILO and UN Women.

Together, the group shared their organization’s campaigns, work and plans on GBV while expressing the need for inclusion of worker’s representatives during discussions/ negotiations, practical solutions, strengthen collaboration and an instrument addressing this important issue in the world of work. The group also discussed gaps in existing evidence, laws and barriers to implementation and shared recommendations on promising practices, practical tools and actions.
