“We call on all of you, use your mind and hour heart when you debate and let us assure that all lives matter and all need protection in the world of work.”
Myrtle Witbooi, IDWF President, spoke at the ILC108 on June 13:
It is an honour to be here at this crucial time for the working class as we debate a convention to eliminate Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.
We have noticed how violence in the world of work is completely out of control. Violence is increasing each day and most of the time it affects more women at the place of work.
Daily we heard or read about the abuse of workers and how they are getting abused by their bosses or co-workers or other kind of abuses.
If our workplace is not safe and at times you simply ignored. Ten to fifteen domestic workers are abused a month. One out of ten will be murdered by the employer; however, this all part of the silent abuse as there is no evidence –and it affects mostly women that are domestics workers. They work alone, they stay alone.
Therefore, our plea is that we need a Convention but a great convention with very strong recommendations That will be ratified by countries to enable workers in the World of Work to be protected from Violence in the world of work.
This convention together with convention 189 and other conventions will strengthen the protection for all against Violence in the World of Work.
Therefore, we call on all of you, use your mind and hour heart when you debate and let us assure that all lives matter and all need protection in the world of work. Free from violence.
