2018 IDWF Congress
This year we will be convening our second Congress. It will take place from 16 to 19 November in Cape Town, South Africa. The IDWF was founded in 2013, and this Congress will close our first 5-year chapter and prepare us for the next.
According to the IDWF Constitution, the Congress is held every 5 years. Some 120 delegates from our 65 affiliates in 53 countries will gather together over these 4 days to review, learn, strategize and make decisions.
This will include the election of new leadership to the Executive Committee.
This is comprised of the President, Deputy President, General Secretary and others from each of the 6 regions – Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Caribbean. There will also be a debate on how to improve our organization, involving changes of the Constitution.
The past five-year period has been an exciting time for us. We have grown and won many victories.
But, alongside our successes, there have been some setbacks and challenges. What drives us forward are the tens of thousands of domestic workers everywhere who are constantly fighting to improve their situation, with so much commitment, dedication, creativity, hard work and resilience. This Congress will be a space to share and learn from our stories so that we will be stronger and more able to gain dignity and realize our rights.
Good preparation is the key to a successful Congress. We will hold regional meetings with all affiliates to gather our suggestions and concerns.
Members of the two Working Committees on Resolutions and Affiliation Fees will soon start consulting affiliates to prepare recommendations for debate at the Congress. We have commissioned an assessment report to draw a full picture of the IDWF in 2018 to share with everybody.
Finally, we will try to make sure we have adequate resources to bring all affiliates together for a meaningful Congress.
