The IDWF is governed by an executive committee that is elected by its members at an international Congress held every 5 years (the founding Congress was held in Uruguay in October 2013). The Executive Committee plays a central role in ensuring that IDWF acts according to its purpose and vision, and it is responsible for the IDWF’s policies and governance as well as staff support and oversight. The Executive Committee is composed of the General Secretary (ex officio) and one representative from each of the following regions: Africa, Asia/Pacific, Latin America, Caribbean, Europe and North America. An alternate representative is also chosen from each region to assume the duties of the Executive Committee member when s/he is unable to do so.

As of December 2023, the IDWF is made up of 93 affiliates from 69 countries, serving a membership of over 669,000 domestic/household workers’ members. Most are organized in trade unions and others in associations, networks and workers’ cooperatives.’

The Congress is the highest decision-making body of the IDWF and will be conducted at least every five years. Extraordinary Congresses can be convened by decision of the Executive Committee or on petition from a simple majority.
