IDWF Program Officer – Africa  (Full Time)

The International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Officer to lead our efforts in strengthening the capacity of our affiliate organizations (domestic workers’ organizations and trade unions) in the Africa region. The Africa region is one of IDWF’s seven global regions with 28 affiliates in 28 countries across Central and West Africa. This pivotal role will be instrumental in advancing labor rights and securing decent work for the millions of domestic workers in the region. Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the programs and activities of IDWF affiliates in the Africa region
  • Provide training and build the organizing and advocacy capacity of domestic workers
  • Strengthen the leadership capacity of the affiliates
  • Lead the planning and logistics for regional workshops, forums, and other events
  • Coordinate and execute regional campaigns on key priorities identified
  • Support the Regional Coordinator in gathering information and data for concepts notes, project proposals and project reporting
  • Assist the project management tasks, including data gathering and reporting
  • Collaborate with the IDWF global communications team to highlight worker stories and support leader participation in global webinars
  • The Program Officer reports directly to the Regional Coordinator and ultimately to the Assistant General Secretary 

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of trade unionism and issues affecting domestic workers in the region
  • Solid understanding of anti-oppression methodologies, gender-based violence, worker and women’s rights
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with domestic worker unions
  • Experience in community/labor organizing and grassroots processes
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience working directly with workers and women groups
  • Proven event planning and logistics coordination skills
  • Knowledge of project and financial management, and reporting
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot effectively
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in French is highly desirable
  • Willingness to travel within the region and internationally, and work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds

Working hours and location

  • 40 hours per week, able to work a flexible schedule with its own equipment and stable internet, e.g. during evening, weekends and public holiday, subject to the scheduling of activities and needs of organizations.
  • This is a remote position, but the candidate must reside within the Africa region and have access to reliable internet and necessary equipment to perform the job effectively
