The International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) seeks to hire a Program Officer to strengthen the organizations of the IDWF affiliates (domestic workers’ organizations/trade unions) in Latin America to achieve labour rights and decent work for domestic workers. Currently the region has 25 affiliated domestic workers unions across 15 Latin American countries.

Key responsibilities:
Field Organizing with affiliated domestic workers unions in the region (70%)
- Program Support & Implementation: Assist in the development and delivery of programs for IDWF affiliates in the Latin America region, ensuring alignment with the IDWF strategic plan and local campaigns.
- Union Strengthening: Enhance the capacity of domestic workers’ organizations by providing information, training, coordination, and hands-on support to strengthen membership, leadership, and advocacy efforts.
- Mobilization & Membership Growth: Support affiliates in designing and implementing programs to mobilize, organize, and recruit members, thereby building stronger, more effective unions.
- Regional Capacity Building: Organize and facilitate regional workshops to promote knowledge-sharing, skills-building, and leadership development among domestic workers’ leaders.
- Event Planning & Coordination: Lead the planning, logistics, and execution of regional workshops, forums, and other gatherings, ensuring smooth operations and impactful outcomes.
- Policy & Legal Monitoring: Stay informed on policy and legal developments in the region, particularly those affecting domestic workers, and share updates with affiliates.
- Global Communications Collaboration: Work with the global communications team to highlight the stories of domestic workers and support leaders in participating in global webinars and campaigns.
Project management and administration (30%)
- Affiliate Reporting Support: Provide guidance and training to affiliates on preparing clear, detailed, and well-written narrative and financial reports. Compile regional reports for submission to the Regional Coordinator for review.
- Regional Planning & Reporting: Collaborate with the Regional Coordinator and regional Executive Committee members in developing the regional work plan and 6-month reports. Assist in pre-congress preparations and reporting.
Reporting
- The Program Officer works closely with another regional Program Officer and Regional Coordinator and reports directly to the Regional Coordinator and ultimately to the General Secretary
Skills and Qualifications
- Solid understanding of anti-oppression methodologies, popular education, gender based violence, womens’ rights, and workers rights
- Experienced in organizing large regional events and logistics preparation for trade union gatherings
- Leadership and ability to problem solving and troubleshooting in events preparation
- Strong communication and people’s skills to interact effectively with affiliated domestic workers unions
- Team player oriented yet able to work independently as well
- Knowledge of trade unionism, and domestic workers issues in the region.
- Familiarity with community/labor organizing and grassroots processes
- Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and good command in English, both oral and written.
- Ability and desire to travel (4-5 times a year approximately)
- At least 3 years relevant working experience, ideally, in working directly with women’s and workers groups
Working hours and location
- 40 hours per week, able to work a flexible schedule, e.g. during evening, weekends and public holiday, subject to the scheduling of activities and needs of organizations.
- This is a remote position, but the candidate must reside within the Latin America region and have access to reliable internet and necessary equipment to perform the job effectively
- The position requires travels to countries within the region more or less 4-5 times a year.
