The International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) is a global, membership-based organization dedicated to advocating for the rights of domestic and household workers. Established as a network in 2006 and officially formed as a federation in 2013, the IDWF has become a leading voice for domestic workers worldwide. We believe that domestic work is work and that all domestic workers deserve the same rights as all other workers.

As of December 2023, the IDWF is made up of 90 affiliates from 69 countries, serving a membership of over 669,000 domestic/household workers’ members. Most are organized in trade unions and others in associations, networks and workers’ cooperatives.

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Accounting Assistant to support our day-to-day financial operations. This role involves preparing payment vouchers, maintaining accurate accounting records, assisting with financial report preparation, and ensuring compliance with internal financial guidelines. The Accounting Assistant will work closely with the Finance Manager and Accounting Officer to uphold the financial integrity of the organization, focusing on general ledger updates, payment processing, and financial reporting tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare payment vouchers for all transactions, and ensure that all supporting documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Prepare weekly payments to ensure accuracy and compliance with IDWF’s financial policies.
  • Review reimbursement claims/ financial reports submitted by staff and affiliates to ensure compliance with internal guidelines, financial reporting requirements and project budgets.
  • Update the general ledger to reflect financial transactions accurately, maintaining consistency across accounts.
  • Manage the filing and documentation of accounting records, so that vouchers, invoices, receipts, and other financial documents are organized and easily retrievable.
  • Utilize the accounting system and software to process and update accounting records.
  • Assisting in compiling and consolidating financial data for both internal and external reporting.
  • Assist in preparing invoices and receipts for various income, including affiliation fees.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure consistency in accounting procedures.
  • Partner with the Administrative Officer to support financial arrangements for IDWF events.
  • Support any other duties or assignments with the Finance and Administrative team, for example, assisting in the financial training to affiliates.

Requirements

  • Support IDWF’s principles, values, vision, and mission.
  • Degree in financial accounting, business administration, economics, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on working experience in accounting.
  • Proficient in bookkeeping and spreadsheet programs, including Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with financial accounting software, such as Sage.
  • Strong communication skills that enable effective engagement with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong numerical aptitude with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in both written and spoken English.
  • Prior experience in non-governmental organizations or trade unions is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and internationally, estimate 1 – 2 time(s) per year.

Working hours and location

  • 40 hours per week and the ability to work a flexible schedule, which may occasionally include evenings, weekends, and public holidays, depending on the scheduling of activities and the needs of the organization.
  • This is a remote position. The candidate must have access to reliable internet and necessary equipment to perform the job effectively
