In the past five years, the IDWF in Latin America and the Caribbean has made significant progress toward its goal of achieving decent work for nearly 15 million domestic workers (about 20% of the global workforce in the sector). In addition to a substantial increase in membership, the region has solidified its leadership in terms of ratifications of ILO Convention 189, passage of new laws, and adoption of labor reforms. All of this has been achieved through the grassroots power of domestic workers deployed through awareness-raising campaigns, advocacy, and alliance-building. There are still major challenges ahead —mainly in terms of access to social security, minimum wage, formalization, and compliance with existing regulations—, but there is also collective power and unity to overcome them. Yes, we can!
