In late October last year, Hurricane Melissa tore through Jamaica, leaving an unprecedented trail of destruction. The worst climate disaster in the country’s history damaged nearly 200,000 buildings and caused estimated losses of US$8–15 billion—almost a quarter of Jamaica’s GDP. But beyond the numbers is a devastating human toll: more than 1.5 million people were affected, 100,000 were displaced, and at least 45 lives were lost.

The storm hit hardest those who were already struggling to stay afloat: domestic workers—the ones who keep households and the care economy running. Among members of our affiliate, the Jamaica Household Workers’ Union (JHWU), 1,443 domestic workers were severely impacted: 310 lost all or part of their homes, many were displaced, and many others lost their jobs and income—pushing families into hunger and deep hardship.

With limited resources but extraordinary determination, JHWU has provided emergency relief—food, water, clothing, medicines, temporary shelter—and emotional support from the earliest days. Still, the needs far exceed what they can cover alone. That is why the IDWF is launching this fundraising drive to help domestic workers in Jamaica meet urgent needs, rebuild their homes, and recover their livelihoods.
