Climate, Gender, Migration: Public Services, Decent Work & Rights-Based Pathways
When climate change impacts communities, women and girls face particular challenges. Weak public services and disaster response exacerbate poverty and inequality. These factors lead to internal displacement or cross-border migration for a growing number of women and girls, who may also face intersecting oppressions including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity, and religion. When women migrate, they face similar barriers. Robust social protection systems, decent work including in the health and care sector, access to public services and public infrastructure are necessary both to prevent displacement, meet basic needs and empower women and girls adapt and build resilience to climate change and conflict.
