The CSC, the FGTB and CGSLB welcomed the June 10 filing today by the Minister Kris Peeters of Belgium's ratification instruments for Conventions 189 and 159 of the ILO on decent work for domestic workers and rehabilitation professional and employment of disabled people.

USA: Bill Clinton signing NDWA Fair Care Pledge

The National Domestic Workers Alliance and Hand in Hand are launching a national Fair Care Pledge initiative with Care.com, which will ask the company's over 6 million employer users to become fair domestic employers by providing a living wage, paid time off and clear expectations. The pledge will go out to 1 million of their users on June 10. They will also provide families with tools and resources to meet those obligations. They unveiled it at the Clinton Global Initiative and the Former President Bill Clinton recognized the Fair Care Pledge.

The award honors IDWF’s achievements to build a strong, democratic and united domestic/ household workers global organization to protect and advance domestic workers’ rights everywhere. IDWF is the only international trade union federation led by women. It aims to organise a united, international voice for domestic workers and, on a local level, to build collective strength to ensure rights of domestic workers.

"The private household is an odd employment place. You don't need to have a licence. There are no checks. It's completely unregulated," said Kate Roberts, who works for Kalayaan, a charity campaigning to improve domestic workers' rights. "When you rely on your employer for everything - your immigration status, your visa, your job, knowledge of your rights - then you're in a particularly vulnerable situation," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

As of late spring, more than 60 domestic workers had participated in the Arise training and received a certificate of completion, said Jakubek, who’s now working with her partners to develop a health and safety train-the-trainer curriculum. The completion certificate states that the worker has participated in health, safety and green cleaning training and is designed to help domestic workers market their services and secure fair employment.

It is largely women — 90 percent of the workforce is women — and they range in age.
