USA -

On Sunday, September 30, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed the California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. Governor Brown had the opportunity to help lead the nation towards progress and equality for our growing, vital workforce of women. Instead, he chose to set us all back.

"I find it more prudent to do the studies before considering an untested legal regime for those that work in our homes." - California Gov. Jerry Brown

But the truth is, for more than a decade, domestic workers have been organizing in California, building training programs, hiring halls, cooperatives, and support groups across the state. They assert their rights and dignity; and through their organizing, they have improved their own quality of life despite more than 70 years of exclusion from basic labor protections.

"For decades we have tirelessly cared for California's homes, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities without the protection of basic rights," Sylvia Lopez, a worker with the California Domestic Workers Coalition, said in a statement. She called Brown's veto "a huge disappointment." Ammiano, in a statement distributed by the coalition, said Brown "missed an opportunity to prove himself as a leader in civil rights."

Join us in telling Governor Brown that you can veto a bill, but you can't veto a movement.

Help us send Governor Brown a message that he needs to clean up his act — can you pledge $5 (or more) today to send Governor Brown a sponge?

To help demonstrate that domestic work is real work, we will be sending Governor Brown thousands of sponges (the tools of our trade) from domestic workers and supporters throughout California and the nation.  With your pledge of $5, we will send Governor Brown a sponge with your name —and, if you wish, a personal message.
