To Allies, Partners and Friends of IDWF

Dear friends, dear comrades,

An Appeal to IDWF Solidarity Fund – Care for Those Who Care For You

Domestic workers are on the frontline to fight Covid-19 to keep their employers healthy and safe.  Yet they are among the hardest-hit.  Given their on-going vulnerabilities with the majority as informal workers and women from disadvantaged communities such as women of colors, migrants, indigenous, etc., they are in a critical situation after months of lockdown, social distancing, lack of income and other health emergencies.  Many domestic workers have no jobs for months.  Extremely few of them are included in any governments’ emergency relief programs.  The migrant workers who are without jobs and without the option to return home due to flights stoppage are trapped in a desperate situation.

To read more about the situation, please see the attached link:

Therefore, the IDWF has launched a fundraising campaign to create a $2-million USD Solidarity Fund to support our domestic workers to:

  • Protect jobs by providing protective equipment (PPE) to domestic workers so that they can go to work safely
  • Give out food and small amounts of cash to the members in critical situation
  • Connect and keep communication lines open with our members online
  • Keep our affiliates’ offices open to members who need shelters
  • Advocate for policy changes

As of today, we have provided $472,194 to our affiliates in 55 countries with the project monies that our funders have given us permission to repurpose for Covid-19 emergency responses. Needs are vast.  These are like drops in the ocean.  Yet, the more we have, the more we can do.

June 16 is the International Domestic Workers Day marking the adoption of the ILO Convention 189 – the Domestic Workers Convention, a significant milestone that IDWF and our affiliates have mobilized and fought for.

This year given the harsh realities of the pandemic, we in particular, want to celebrate the resiliency of domestic workers worldwide.

We are also asking you to join us in this lifeline relay by donating and spreading this message in your community.  In solidarity, we will enable our domestic workers and their families to survive and even rise up stronger from the crisis.

To donate, you may do it online:  https://idwfed.org/en/donate or make a bank transfer to the IDWF bank account in Hong Kong.

Any suggestion on how we can grow the Solidarity Fund or anything you can do to show your care would be greatly appreciated.

In Solidarity and best wishes,

Myrtle Witbooi                                           Elizabeth Tang
