PERU -

Arequipa – In the city live between 2,000 and 2,500 people dedicated to domestic work, which in their majority receive low pays and abuses on the part of the employers, the Secretary General of the Domestic Workers' Union of Arequipa, Marleny Robles Lazo, informed.

According to Robles, although they would have to gain a minimum pay, the majority receives between 300 and 400 Soles. In addition, they lack social security, vacations, payment for overtime and other benefits which the Law of the Domestic Workers stipulates (Law 27986), effective since 2003. “Some work between 18 and 16 hours dayly living at the place of their work, and more than 10 hours when living at home. Others undergo sexual abuses, harassments, beatings and psychological battering. We want that our rights are respected and the law is fulfilled”, she said.

Concerning minors in domestic work, Robles mentioned that they suffer, although there are cases in which it is claimed that the girl is helping her relatives or godfathers, when in fact this is not certain. This 30 of March the International Domestic Workers' Day is celebrated. Since 1988 this date is commemorated to make the situation of discrimination and suffering visible.

At the moment her union counts on 190 affiliates. 10% are men who work as drivers or gardeners. They organized an orientative fair on the labor rights of domestic workers.
