PERU -

Concerning the domestic workers who demand the urgent ratification of Convention 189 of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on the rights of domestic workers, it seems that they will finally see a part of their yearnings fulfilled, before the commitment assumed by the Commission of Work of the Congress to pick up the exigency.

“Convention 189 of the International Labor Organization will be ratified during the present legislature”, congressman Yonhy Lescano, secretary of the Commission of Work of the Parliament, announced during the Sectorial Public Hearing of Domestic Workers.

The Union of Domestic Workers of the Lima Region met yesterday to set out before the authorities the benefits that the international document entails for more than 500,000 citizens who work with trimmed labor rights. Law 27986 on domestic work is considered by this union as excluding since it favors the discrimination and the cut of the labor benefits.

Leddy Mozombite, Secretary General of the SINTTRAHOL, explained that the approval of the international standard will mean the fulfillment of one of the most important promises of the president of the Republic, Ollanta Humala, during the electoral campaign.

“We do not lose hope in the government's announcement of the ratification of the Convention, because the domestic workers already stopped being maids of families to pass to be servants with recognized labor rights”, Mozombite affirmed.

In the event also the official in charge for Women's Rights of the Defending Council of the Town, Carolina Garcés, the Secretary General of the CGTP, Mario Huamán, were present, among other authorities.
