The suicide of an Ethiopian maid days after she was shown on video being roughed-up by her Lebanese handler is shining a harsh light on the region’s multibillion-dollar household labour industry.
Alem Dechasa-Desisa, 33, died at her own hands last month. She was the most high profile in a long string of maid and nanny suicides in Lebanon, where at least one domestic worker a week kills herself, according to a recent study conducted by the advocacy group Human Rights Watch.
