The move by the National Social Security Fund to rally employers to register their workers is timely. It will ensure employees enjoy the fruits of their labour when they can no longer work. However, NSSF’s plan to undertake a door-to-door inspection for unregistered domestic workers is unwise. The Fund should first conduct a campaign to educate the public on its mandate. Currently, few people are aware of the benefits of NSSF or the investment opportunities.

The majority of employees in domestic work are mature enough to make personal decisions on matters touching on their welfare, including registering and contributing towards the Fund.

The problem with the door-to-door inspection is that NSSF officials will meet domestic workers out to malign and bad-mouth their employers.

Moreover, domestic workers have the highest rate of turnover. Some are only employed for days before quitting or getting the sack.

Compliance with NSSF regulations should be a personal responsibility best left to domestic workers, just like they are obliged to get a national identification card if they are 18 years and over.

The Fund is jumping the gun by trying to nail employers who are only creating jobs for fellow Kenyans.
