Jamaica -

Considering the ongoing economic crisis and the global health pandemic, the need for finding new venues for employment is increasing as domestic workers are laid off from their jobs.

The Jamaica Household Workers' Union (JHWU) works on supporting its members accessing some economic opportunities. To that end, JHWU and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (LMIS) in Jamaica have signed a memorandum of understanding, on October 14, to promote the use of the database and the services offered by the Ministry for the domestic workers members of the union, in line with the government's policy on poverty reduction.

The Ministry will put its web-based mediums in the service of domestic workers, to link prospective employers with employees and vice versa, in addition to provision of basic career counselling which includes but is not limited to resume writing, interview and job search techniques.

This step towards responding to domestic and household workers needs promotes fair and just living and working conditions and aims to empower JHWU members in their plight to achieve personal and career development goals.
