Ireland: It's official! Ireland ratifies the Domestic Workers Convention
Details
In transmitting the instrument of ratification, H.E. Ambassador Patricia O’Brien stated:
“The decision to ratify Convention No. 189 is an important milestone and shows a strong commitment on the part of Ireland to the protection of the rights of domestic workers. Ireland already has a strong track record in the area of protecting people involved in domestic work, as shown by the fact that the Convention may be ratified without having to amend the existing suite of employment rights legislation. The National Employment Rights Authority has undertaken a programme of inspections involving domestic workers, and continues to respond to any complaints received from domestic workers. In addition, the Labour Relations Commission, in conjunction with the social partners, produced a Code of Practice for Protecting Persons Employed in Other People’s Homes which recognises the unique circumstances that occur in the domestic work employment relationship.”
In receiving the instrument of ratification of Convention No. 189 by Ireland, the Director of the International Labour Standards Department, Ms Doumbia-Henry, stated:
“Today’s ratification by Ireland confirms its willingness and commitment to support the growing momentum to ensure that domestic workers enjoy the same basic labour rights as other workers. Ireland has taken innovative measures to enable domestic workers to enjoy effective protection. I urge other countries to move to ratify and implement Convention No. 189, thereby paying tribute to all of the world’s domestic workers for their enormous contribution”.
