DOMINICAN REPUBLIC -

The first Special Training Center in Domestic Services (CEFESD) has been inaugurated, with the aim to enable, to form and to spread the duties and labor rights to employers, employees and especially to the domestic workers.

In the Dominican Republic, there are estimated more than 250,000 domestic workers, an informal sector, conformed mainly by women, whose condition of unreliability in the work affects them significantly, suffering from a restricted access to basic services, eg: health, education, worthy feeding and living, which causes the worsening and reproduction of poverty and vulnerability cycles.

The Training Center was created to promote good relations between workers and employers, considering the supervision by the government, starting with the empowerment of these subjects, according to the information given by Ruth Diaz, President of the National Women Workers' Federation (FENAMUTRA), during the inauguration of the premises.

“It is our general mission to provide a platform of knowledge, basic practices and procedures, that allow the fortification, qualification and the formalization of the work, to the colectivity of domestic workers”, she said.

The Secretary of Labor and President of the National Council of Social Security (CNSS), Francisco Domínguez Brito, greeted the initiative, and emphasized the importance that domestic workers are included in the Dominican System of Social Security (SDSS), which will improve their quality of life.

Jacobo Ramos, Secretary General of the National Confederation of Dominican Workers (CNTD), expressed the satisfaction of the union for the delivery of a school directed to domestic workers.

The 100th Conference of the International Labor Organization (ILO), adopted the Convention 189 that deals with the rights of domestic workers. On this subject, recent data of this international organism consider that around 53 million workers in 117 countries earn their living in the domestic sector, which until today is in most of these countries not regulated by labor laws.
