At the end of November, at the request of Asociación de Trabajadoras de Hogar (ATH), Claire Hobden went to Bilbao to meet with the organizers at ATH and to do a presentation about the ILO Process and the activities of the IDWN at a conference on domestic work organized by ATH. Here is a brief report on the activities while Claire Hobden was in Bilbao.

This paper provides a broader overview of domestic service in India, outlining the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the workforce. The definitional issues involved in understanding domestic work are discussed, with special reference to national classifications. The extant pattern of work relations in the occupation and the prominent role played by placement agencies are highlighted.

They are private homes, where housekeepers, nannies and caregivers for the elderly do work as important as it is isolated and unprotected.

Story Malaysia: Drafting First Laws To Protect Domestic Workers

Malaysia is drafting new laws to protect domestic workers from sexual harassment, non-payment of wages and poor working conditions, an official said Thursday. The move would provide the first legal protection for domestic workers in Malaysia – mostly from Indonesia – who are not covered by legislation that protects foreign workers in other sectors like construction.
