Story Mexico: Local Deputy urged the Senate to ratify C189

As part of a legal analysis of labor, today law experts demanded a better legislation in some labor sectors as the domestic one. Therefore local deputies exhorted the Senate of the Republic to ratify Convention 189 of the International Labor Organization on Decent Work for Domestic Workers. Deputy José Ángel Alvarado Hernández, coordinator of the Legislative Group of New Alliance, mentioned that the domestic workers represent 4.6 percent of the economically active population in our country, of which 90 percent are women.

Researchers of the Independent National University of Mexico (UNAM) presented a series of results on the national economy, in which they emphasize that 59 percent of the employed population, that is to say, 28 million people are in the informality. Among those who are 60 years old or more, this situation reaches to 75.7 percent.

With the aim of valorizing the domestic work and eradicating the unfavorable discriminatory practices in this sector, the Ministry of Justice and Work (MJT) raises a series of adjustments to be considered within the legislation. The law proposal includes the control of the fulfillment of labor laws in the domestic sector, the health insurance, the retirement, days of rest and an increase of the base of the wage until 60% of the effective minimum pay.
