IN THE SPOTLIGHT!
KUDHEIHA
Our affiliate Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Education Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA) is a trade union established in the year 1951. KUDHEIHA has branches and members all over Kenya! In general, it has dedicated itself to awareness raising and advocacy around safe migration.

Specifically related to domestic workers, KUDHEIHA is fighting to promote the formalization of this sector of work and is pushing to convince the government to ratify ILO conventions 189 and 190.

KUDHEIHA has recently been focusing on advocacy for safe migration by reaching out to community leaders and local authorities as well as lobbying with the government. It also tries to engage and mobilize organizations to support these efforts.

In these dire times, KUDHEIHA is handling complaints from domestic workers and advising them on dispute handling procedures with relevant bodies and authorities involved in the protection of Kenyan migrant workers. It has also been mobilizing migrant domestic workers through their advocacy on safe labor migration with support from the Solidarity Centre by bringing on board relevant stakeholders including recruitment agencies, civil society networks and county governments.

“The situation here is awfully bad. I have no space to sleep, not enough food, and I am very worried that I may catch the virus here.”

“She wants to take her own life because she does not want to give her employers the satisfaction of killing her.”
Domestic and gender-based violence is rampant and intensified under COVID-19! IDWF actively works on addressing not only the labor dimension, but also the gendered dimension of the crisis.
