Objectives
About UDWA:
The mission of UDWA is to serve and advocate for our membership. Our work and efforts provide support for providers and others alike for greater public good. Local 3930 will continue to work towards better wages, improved benefits and legislative reform.
Through our active force in our community and raising our public image, UDW will obtain the dignity and respect for providers and clients we serve.
Programs/Main Areas or Work/Campaigns:
a. Care Agenda is a campaign to bring awareness to California’s growing need to find a solution on how it will take care of the aging population and it is tied to the CA gubernatorial race of 2018.
b. Organizing is a fundamental work to not just grow the union, but to also educate, mobilize and engage civically to help elect legislators who support and understand our work, our value and the IHSS program which enables our members to work and provide the quality care that their clients need.
c. Social Justice coalition work is the work which ties our members to campaigns that may not be directly related to their jobs but it directly impacts them and their families. These issues include housing, jobs, transportation, homelessness, mass incarceration and protecting the 11 million undocumented workers in the US, many of whom are caregivers.
History
In 1977, followers of Cesar Chavez (a historic farm worker leader and first Mexican American farm worker leader of the movement) were working alongside the disability community activist and organizing for better working conditions. They formed an organizing committee that would become the United Domestic Workers of America.
