National Federation of Domestic Workers/Federação Nacional das Trabalhadoras Domésticas (Fenatrad) is an association formed by 26 unions and one other association.

Goals:

  • full rights equality
  • create grassroots unions
  • consolidate the union, legal and political structure of FENATRAD
  • have mechanisms of sectoral collective agreements, in dialogues with employer representatives

History

The first domestic association was founded in 1936 by the black and communist militant Laudelina de Campos Mello. At the moment, they called for the right to form domestic unions (banned by law until 1988) and access to social security.

In the 1960s, the Young Catholic Workers encouraged the creation of local associations in major cities such as Salvador, Recife, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Laudelina founded the association of Campinas in 1961. The struggle for equal rights and the inclusion of domestic workers in the labor code, passed in 1943 and excluding the category of domestic workers in article 7, began.

In 1972, the first law was won in favor of the domestic, making the formalization of workers through the optional work letter. It also guarantees access to retirement (for formalization).

In 1981, the National Council of Domestic Workers was created, bringing together existing local associations. In 1985, at the fifth National Conference of Domestic Workers, trade unions approved a bill expressly calling for equal rights, and in particular the minimum wage, unemployment insurance and working time regulation.

With the return of democracy and the 1988 Constitution, the right to form unions is reached, and associations are progressively transformed into unions. In 1988, Brazil also participated in the founding of CONLACTRAHO.

In 1997, FENATRAD was founded and joined the Single Union of Central Workers, the CUT. Since then, FENATRAD has been fighting for equality of rights and recognition of domestic workers as workers.
