The Kampala Declaration:

The Africa Domestic Workers Network under the auspices of the International Domestic workers Federation (IDWF) Training of Trainers Workshop held from 13-16 October 2016 considered the growing struggle and challenges of precarity and exploitation faced by migrant domestic workers in Uganda. This crisis is increasingly becoming a concern in many other African countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and Malawi.

The situation of migrant domestic workers has been absent from mainstream employment discourse even though hundreds of domestic workers continue to be smuggled and cheated into taking up seemingly lucrative employment overseas which often turns out to be a deceptions. Many such migrant workers end up physically, financially and mentally abused; while others lose their lives or return home with illnesses.

The Africa Domestic Workers Network registers its support and solidarity to the Uganda Hotels, Food, Tourism, Supermarkets & Allied Workers Union (UHFTAWU) who are mobilizing action and calling attention on the plight of migrant domestic workers in Uganda, mostly young women. The Domestic Workers encourage enhanced dialogue with the government to ensure the protection of migrant domestic workers rights as well as the developing of targeted sensitization and awareness for Domestic Workers Recruitment Agencies, migrant domestic workers and the general public on the need to ensure decent work for migrant domestic workers. We believe that such efforts among others will assist in the transformation towards a just society where migrant domestic worker's rights are recognized and protected.

An injury to One, is an injury to ALL! Solidarity Forever!
