Domestic work is one of the most important occupations in the low wage sector for women in Asia and the Pacific and the most important occupation for women migrant workers. Eighty-three per cent of the world’s 52 million domestic workers globally are women. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for 21.4 million of those, making it especially important that protection for domestic workers, particularly migrants, is addressed in the Beijing +20 Review.

The ILO, UN Women, ESCAP with the Network of Domestic Workers in Thailand and HomeNet will organize a side event during the Asia-Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (to be held in Bangkok from 17-20 November) that will highlight the need to better protect domestic workers, enhance their economic empowerment and decent work opportunities.

The objective of this side event is to advocate with Asia and the Pacific member States to adopt labour, social protection and migration laws and policies covering domestic workers in line with the Convention 189 and related Convention on the Elimination of Domestic Work (CEDAW) principles, (including General Recommendation 26) and recognize the gender-specific challenges that are inherent in the work of domestic workers.

The event will include a photo exhibition, presentations and a discussion.

Photo Exhibition

The photo exhibition "No one should work this way" will consist of the first showing of pictures by the renowned photographer, Mr Steve McCurry, taken as part of an advocacy project promoting domestic workers rights. The photos capture some domestic workers’ experiences of abuse. Ms Karen Emmons, a journalist, who worked with Mr McCurry, will give an overview of the project, including some of the individual stories behind the photographs.

Presentations and Discussion

Ms Bijaya Rai Shrestha, a former domestic worker from Nepal turned advocate, will provide the voice of migrant domestic workers.

Ms Elizabeth Tang, from the International Domestic Workers Federation will discuss how organizing would address some of the exploitative and abusive practices detailed by the other presenters.
