We were pleased to be launching the Legal Toolkit in Africa, where there is an urgent need for capacity-building around the Convention. The aims of the workshop (from perspective of workers) were the following: Increase our capacity to know and understand ILO standards on domestic work (Convention 189 and Recommendation 201)

  • Make the link between domestic workers’ ground reality and the international standards
  • Identify gaps in our national laws when compared with the provisions of C189
  • Develop demands for aligning our national laws with international standards
  • Develop strategies, actions and campaigns that can help us use C189 and R201 in the struggle for recognition and rights for domestic workers
  • Organize to make the key provisions of C189 a reality for domestic workers while we negotiate with our governments to ratify the Convention.
  • Familiarize ourselves with the draft Toolkit so we can make the best use of it in our countries. Provide feedback to WIEGO from this pilot process.
  • Strengthen our domestic workers organizations and build solidarity across the Africa region and internationally
