SOUTH AFRICA -

Press Statement

SADSAWU welcomes the latest review of the minimum wage for Domestic workers.

However, we would like to bring to the attention of the Minister of Labour that many wage reviews were conducted over the last ten years and not once was the workers’ input fairly considered.

SADSAWU continues to call for a “Decent wage for Decent work” for all domestic workers!

We call on Department of Labour to hear our demand

  • One minimum wage for all. That means no separate wage rates for urban, rural or provinces;
  • A minimum wage of R3000.00 for full time workers; (R2500.00 is the bare minimum);
  • A casual wage of R20.00 an hour for hourly workers;
  • And not less than R150.00 a day for day workers
  • And a transport allowance for day workers,

Department of Labour should also conduct a survey from amongst domestic workers and their employers on the minimum wage demand from SADSAWU as there are many employers who grossly underpay their domestic workers, but, there are also the many that pay their employees’ way above these minimums, showing their appreciation for their employees.

Domestic workers are, in the main, mothers and keepers of the family. They leave their homes in the early hours of the morning without any security and return home late at night. Their objective circumstances should be the first consideration when setting minimum wage rates – not the pockets of the employers!
