International Domestic Workers Day is a celebration of a movement that seeks to secure the rights of this growing but generally hidden workforce. IDWF and its affiliates, together with a global network of organizations that work to protect migrant workers, join forces and develop different actions, services, research and resources in their efforts to guarantee the human rights of all domestic workers; independently of their nationality or immigration status.

LATIN AMERICA -

Internal and cross-border migration is significant in Latin America and domestic and care work are important sources of employment for migrants. Most migrants employed in domestic service are women who face increased risk of exploitation, discrimination, human traffic and abuse. Their earnings are among the lowest of all jobs and a significant proportion live below the poverty line.

Despite the important contribution to our societies by migrant domestic workers, the vast majority are not protected and/or are undocumented living in fear of deportation. These concerns must be addressed with dialogues, actions and changes in legislation that support the inclusion of every migrant, immigrant and refugee in the labor market under legal frameworks and social protections.
