Sri Lanka: Domestic Workers Launch signature campaign for Legal Act

The Domestic Workers Union, jointly with other unions and women’s movement, launched a public signature campaign in Colombo on June 16 2013, International Domestic Workers’ Day. It is a campaign to get support from the public to press the government to establish a domestic workers act. Several signature collection points were set up in Colombo: in Maradana (opposite of railway station), in front of a supermarket in Nugegoda and Fort Railway station. Members of the unions and women’s movement started to collect signatures from the passer by at 10.00 to 12.30 pm.

In about a week's time, we will be celebrating the International Women's Day. The Caribbean Domestic Workers' Network is collecting signatures to ask the governments to ratify C189 to protect rights of all domestic workers. All signatures will be submitted to Ministers of Labor on March 8, 2013.

In spite of this, the union animates the employers to regularize the labor relation. The group of domestic workers of the CCOO, greets the International Day of Domestic Workers, the 30 of March. After almost 30 years of vindication organized by the unions CCOO and the General Workers Union UGT, it was obtained that in the Reformation of the Social Security (Law 27/2011), the Special Regime of Domestic Workers was integrated in the General Regime of the Social Security.
