“We are making history ... You have a voice, and together we are going places.” — Marlene Champion, Domestic Worker and Domestic Workers United (DWU) member New York City, 2003.
Marlene is a long-time member of DWU. She spoke those words seven years before the New York State Domestic Workers Bill of Rights became law, but she was right — the domestic workers of DWU were indeed making history!
Over the next seven years, Marlene and hundreds of other DWU members and their supporters in New York organized countless bus trips, speak-outs, children’s marches and rallies in support of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. In 2010, their organizing finally paid off: the bill passed and was signed into law, becoming the first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights in U.S. history. Marlene and the courageous domestic workers of DWU were there to celebrate.
DWU is full of visionary women like Marlene. DWU was itself one of the founding members of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), when we came together in 2007. They have helped lead the way for domestic workers to come out of the shadows and win decades-long exclusion from labor protections — not just in New York, but nation-wide.
DWU’s foundational story is a model for our movement — one that cuts across racial, ethnic and cultural lines. DWU was organized in 2000 by members of two immigrant women’s organizations — the Women Workers Project of CAAAV, a Filipina domestic workers organization, and Andolan Organizing South Asian Workers, a South Asian domestic workers group. That spirit of unity across lines that could divide vulnerable workers carries forward. In 2010, DWU represented NDWA as a founding member of the International Domestic Workers Network.
And they continue to be a model for NDWA member organizations across the country. DWU is now leading a campaign focused on the implementation and enforcement of the New York Bill of Rights through outreach, organizing and education. And DWU members provide crucial support for similar Bill of Rights campaigns by domestic workers across the country.
We are so proud to honor DWU for their tireless work on behalf of domestic workers rights at LEADING WITH LOVE: Celebrating 5 Years of NDWA on November 14th in Washington DC. Will you join us to celebrate their legacy? Click here to RSVP. And, if you can’t make it to DC, don’t worry! You can send your love from afar here.
It’s time to celebrate all this collective achievement and give special recognition to leaders who have been at the forefront, powering all that we do.
