7 Aug 2015, Jala PRT office, Jakarta, Indonesia

Jala PRT and its domestic workers unions have been fighting for the adoption of Domestic Workers Bill. The Bill has been on and off listed from the agenda in Indonesia Parliament. Massive mobilization on social media has been organized by domestic workers to express their demand. Based on this background, a practical training workshop was organized by the IDWF, with the support of ILO PROMOTE project, for domestic workers leaders of Jala PRT.

The workshop is to strengthen their current social media campaign and link up to IDWF communication platform.

The participants were 16 leaders from Sapulidi Domestic Workers Union, Tunas Mulia Domestic Workers Union, Congress of Domestic Workers in Yogyakarta, Merdeka Domestic Workers Union and Sumut Domestic Workers Union.

The participants had all android phones. Therefore, the practice by participants were done through android phones.

Fish Ip, regional coordinator of IDWF, first introduced the site map of IDWF online communication platforms. She demonstrated the registration process as IDWF communication network members.

Participants at the same time register as members. It took quite a while for this due to slow internet connection and more difficult in operation on android phones. Some 80% of the participants successfully got registration as communication network members.

Then Fish demonstrated how to upload photos and information through “community” in IDWF website.

After this, IDWF facebook, twitter, flikr were introduced. Participants were asked to “like” IDWF facebook page and be members of IDWF facebook group.

Tips were shared how the participants can easily make their posting be shared with IDWF members and supporters by authorizing their own facebook postings into “public”.

Making Infographic and memes

Sargini and Murtini were invited to share their learnings on putting up infographics.

Here were some tips. Participants had on-the-site work to choose a photo from their android phone. Then put on messages on the photos to turn it into memes to show domestic workers’ demand.

All participants were able to make memes.

Despite difficulty with internet connections and functionality of android phones, the workshop ended with more than half of participants actively post their activities onto IDWF communication platforms and social media.
