DOMESTIC WORKERS TO PROTEST AT PARLIAMENT TODAY

Government fails to extend Basic Rights to DOMESTIC WORKERS!

Members of the Domestic Workers Union will protest at Parliament today to highlight our concerns at the Department of Labour’s complete disregard of SADSAWU submissions on changes to the law pertaining to domestic workers.

For many years we have protested that DOMESTIC WORKERS were held as invisible, until we won international recognition in 2011 through the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 189 on Domestic Workers. The South African government ratified this Convention in 2012 – yet when it comes down to the reality of implementations of regulations to increase the working conditions of domestic workers, we are messed around and government only pays lip service to this most vulnerable sector of workers.

We are tired now.

1.     We demand the immediate implementation of the law and basic OTHER workers’ right to protections and support against injuries on duty in the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act be extended to Domestic workers; Continuing to exclude domestic workers from basic protections is discriminatory!!

2.     SADSAWU rejects the current minimum wages!!

3.     We demand that the government facilitates a proper forum for consultation with workers, employers and others involved, for a proper review of our wages and other conditions of service;

SADSAWU condemns the re-introduction of the “DOMPAS” for mostly domestic workers and gardeners and calls on government to clamp down on crime – which we trust is the ONLY reason for this barbaric system to be brought back……..
