National Domestic Workers Council of KUDHEIHA, Kenya
On November 19, the National Domestic Workers Council of KUDEIHA was inaugurated. In this structure, domestic workers members of the union in 7 counties are organized under Branches which then form the Area Committees which make up the Council. The Counties included were Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Kwale, Kakamega, Nyeri and Eldoret. As a multi-sectoral union, KUDEIHA is composed of Councils of workers by sectors.
The National Domestic Workers Council is led by 12 members-strong committee which include the National Chairperson, Vice-chairperson and the Secretary as follows:
- National Chairperson: Ruth Khakame,-Nairobi
- Deputy Chairperson: Eric Gumba- Kwale
- Secretary: Marcelina Charo- Mombasa
- Commitee members:
Kevin Marega - KIsumu
Shem Omweri - Nairobi
Jane - Eldoret
Michael Muremi - Nyeri
Mary Mukabi - Kakamega
Karisa Kazungu - Mombasa
Peris Wanje - Kwale
The National Chairperson is a member of the Executive Committee of KUHDEIHA.
The major goal of the Council is to negotiate with the Government in favour of the domestic workers nationally and works closely with KUDHEIHA. It is hoped that through the Council domestic workers will strengthen their representation in the union.
“(I will) make sure that members are registered including paid up members, liaise with union to reach the UN, lobby and advocate for C 189 and working together with other stake holders. I will do my best to represent domestic workers in Kenya",
said Ruth, the National Chairperson, 25 years old and has been a full time domestic workers for 6 years.
