A message delivered by Esther Kosi General Secretary of Domestic Services Workers Union (DSWU) Ghana:
Good Morning Comrades:
I deemed it great honour to be with you this morning on this August occasion of celebrating women. Over the years, women issues have been that of great concern to all especially issues of maternity protection for women.
For us who do domestic work, it is perceived by our employers that we are not entitled to maternity leave and that matter, we can carry our one month or two months old babies at our back whilst we perform our task or function. However it has not dawn on our employers that, the nine or even ten months (in some cases) that a woman will carry a pregnancy and agonies that go with it requires that women must fully recover before going back to work.
Hence for us as domestic workers, we believe that the chosen theme emerging from IUF Global theme "Women's rights to Food, Water and Social Protection" for this occasion is very appropriate and the promotion for the ratification of ILO Convention 183, is essential.
We believe that if this convention is ratified together with the provisions in the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) it will urge our employers to see the need for providing maternity protection for our members. We therefore pledge our support for the ratification of ILO C183 and ILO C189 and pray that this symposium will not be one of the ordinary ones but the one that will bring us all something good.
Long live IUF
Long live DSWU
Long live ICU, GAWU and Ghanaian Women
THANK YOU!
