EUROPE -

On 19 April 2017 we had the first ever face-to-face meeting of almost all IDWF Europe affiliates, UNIA (Switzerland), FNV (Netherlands), FILCAMS (Italy), ACV-CSC and Horval (Belgium), NGG (Germany). In addition, UNITE (UK), also representing Justice for domestic workers, PAM (Finland), plus EFFAT affiliates which are organizing domestic workers and/or are interested in the issues of domestic workers. The meeting followed the EFFAT Women's Committee meeting, where domestic workers have been on the agenda since 2009.

The first half of the day was shared with two European employers' organizations which organize agencies that provide services for private households. They employ the domestic workers and subscribe to the concept of decent work and the principle of engaging into collective agreements with the unions. We discussed a joint European project on "voucher systems," which exists in many European countries in order to have a simplified system of employing domestic workers. However, the systems are very different in terms of protection for domestic workers, some are very good and some are, in fact, harmful. We decided to submit a project proposal in June to the European Commission to analyze the existing systems and come up with criteria for an "ideal system".

The second part was dedicated to get to know each other and to inform each other about the situation of domestic workers with regard to legal frameworks (or lack thereof), problems and how domestic workers organize.  We decided to continue these kinds of discussions.

IDWF affiliates FILCAMS (Italy) and ACV-CSC (Belgium) will be piloting in "partnering" more intensely on a bi-lateral basis.

Coming out of the meeting, we decided to re-launch the My Fair Home Campaign on 16th June this year at the European level.
