COLOMBIA -

“It is only by being organized in a union that domestic workers can be heard“, said Yenny del Carmen Hurtado, General Secretary, SINTRASEDOM.

SINTRASEDOM, Colombia, celebrates its 13th Congress On September 13-17, one hundred delegates from various parts of Colombia met in Bogotá for the 13th congress of the domestic workers’ union SINTRASEDOM. The union is more than 30 years old and one of the funding members of the Latin American and Caribbean confederation of domestic workers, CONLACTRAHO. The IDWN vice chair, Ernestina Ochoa, was invited to give an introduction to the Convention 189, as well an overview of the situation of domestic workers in Peru.

Important issues on the agenda were also race discrimination which domestic workers are facing at many levels, in society as well as within the union organizations themselves. The gender committee of the association COCMACIA was asked to help SINTRASEDOM develop more awareness raising campaigns against racism. A video reflecting the working and living conditions of domestic workers led to many testimonies from participants who were victims of various forms of violence perpetrated by their employers: sexual violence and harassment, as well as physical and verbal violence.  For several of the participants this was the first time ever they talked about the extremely painful experiences of these abuses. The session on violence was facilitated by the psychologist from the association KARABANTU who had developed the video together with domestic workers.

Yenny del Carmen Hurtado, who was re-elected as general secretary of SINTRASEDOM, stressed the importance of organizing:  “It is only by being organized in a union that domestic workers can be heard and obtain improvements in their working and living conditions. We are the motor and the oil of society, if we stop our work for one day the economy of the country will stop. If we are organized, we will no longer be seen as anything but as the domestic worker and we can make requests, march and let our voices be heard without fear.  Although the union has many local organizations in the country, there are still many places where domestic workers are not organized. Therefore further efforts of the members are needed to make the union stronger,” said, the general secretary. SINTRASEDOM currently has one thousand members.
